Download and install a copy of Script Debugger before you carry on. Microsoft give it away for free and you can get it here. The first essential step in debugging your code is getting your hands on a debugger. Knowing how to debug effectively is something you either have or you have to pick up over the years and is well beyond the scope of this article. It's an article to describe the practice of debugging. This article isn't a lesson in the theory of debugging. You might think I've spoilt the fun of describing how we go about finding the error. JavaScript looks for an object called "total" on the form and can't find it. This is the cause of my "undefined" error. In this example I have called my field "Total" and refered to is as "frm.total" in the code. For those who can't, the most valuable lesson to learn about JavaScript is that it's case-sensitive and this is the cause of endless errors. All it has to do is add the values in the first two fields and place the sum in the third:Ĭan you see my error already? Most of you probably can. Now look at the code I wrote for the onclick event of the button. Take the form below, used for adding two numbers, as an example. Sometimes things are a lot more obscure but I will keep it simple here. Most JavaScript errors turn out to be really simple mistakes. This article aims to describe a way of doing so. It wastes too much time! We need to find the error fast. Eventually, if you're lucky, you'll discover what was causing the problem. You can use these prompts to tell us the values of certain variables as the code progresses. So what do we do at this point? I sometimes find myself adding alert() boxes at strategic points in the code. The line number includes all lines of JavaScript that happen to be included, as well as blank lines and whatnot. It does provide the line number that the error happened on but trying to find this actual line is not always as easy as you might think. After a while you start to get to know what each one might mean, but for the novice this is all but meaningless. The error message tells us almost nothing. It's not necessarily that it's any harder than the other languages to debug, it's just that Internet Explorer doesn't really help us out. Of all the languages we use on a daily basis as Domino Developers JavaScript has to be the trickiest of them all to debug. Debugging JavaScript in Your Applications 13 January 2004

But, those few extra seconds add up, especially if you create numerous tasks per day. I won't be hyperbolic here and act like Microsoft To Do has a massive learning curve, nor will I claim most actions in it take more than a few extra seconds to complete when compared to the same action in Google Tasks. More: Work from home? Things I wish someone had told me before I started This is why it's of paramount importance that the app we choose to organize our busy schedules is, itself, not a drain on our time. We seek out organization to make our lives easier, reduce the amount of time it takes to complete unpleasant tasks and errands, and to increase the amount of free time we have by enhancing our day-to-day efficiency. But it deserves its own section due to the basic purpose of to-do list apps. I've nibbled around the edges of this category above. The initial menu you're presented with when attempting to set a date and time in Microsoft To Do (left) and Google Tasks (right). While Microsoft To Do provided the same functionality for me, I was constantly bumping up against features I had no use for and working through interface elements that just slowed me down. While Google's lack of complexity might mean its options fall short for some advanced users, Microsoft's attempt to exceed expectations backfires as often as not.ĭuring my time testing both apps, I continually felt like Tasks gave me the freedom to create a surprisingly comprehensive set of reminders and lists across my personal and work calendars. Meanwhile, Microsoft attempts to go above and beyond what the average user might need. At every turn, Google Tasks provides a minimalistic framework to give users just enough functionality to manage their tasks. This initial comparison informs just about every aspect of the user experience for both apps. Microsoft chose to immediately present new users with a long series of automatically curated lists, while Google Tasks says hello to newbies with an almost completely blank slate. However, Microsoft's slightly wider variety of widget size options, and the fact that you can add a new task from any one of them, regardless of their size, gives it the edge here.Īs I mentioned in the intro, Google Tasks and Microsoft To Do take very different approaches to introducing their functionality to new users. Microsoft, meanwhile, includes four widgets: a 2x2 version that lists tasks from the "My Day" screen a 2x2 version similar to Google's smaller offering, but with support for one-tap access to new task creation a 4x2 version that lets you see longer titles, mark individual tasks as completed, and add new tasks and a screen-filling version that does essentially all of the same things as the previous widget, but takes up far more screen real estate.īoth companies' widgets include options that let you choose which of your task lists a widget displays, meaning you can have multiple widgets for multiple lists. Google has two variations: a small 2x2 version that provides a truncated view of your top tasks, with one-tap access to opening the app and a larger 4x2 list that provides quick access to individual tasks, as well as an included button for adding new tasks. Michael Gariffo Widgetsīoth apps support a selection of widgets that are largely identical across their Android and iOS deployments. Three of Microsoft's four available To Do widgets (left) and both of Google's available Tasks widgets (right). However, Microsoft's To Do once again attempts to go a bit further by looping in the company's Planner solution to introduce collaboration tools. This is the only direct external interactivity offered by Tasks that's really worth mentioning. Winner: Tie External platform integrationĪs stated, Google chose to integrate its Gmail service into Google Tasks, while Microsoft integrated its Outlook email solution. However, I wouldn't call the relatively minimal email functionality offered by these apps (covered in more detail below) vital enough to be the sole deciding factor in which one you ultimately choose. Heavy Gmail users might want to opt for Google Tasks just for its ability to immediately create tasks from within Gmail, while Outlook aficionados might want to use To Do for the same reason. Which app wins this category of the competition depends largely on whether your day-to-day is more reliant on the Google or Microsoft ecosystems. I even saw two men skijoring (Dad, Google it) behind huskies. In the winter this section of the trail is wide enough to fit a car (vehicles aren’t allowed) and is extremely popular for dog walkers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. This hike begins at the Lincoln Woods Visitor Center by crossing the footbridge and starting out on the Lincoln Woods Trail for 1.4 miles. The bridge crossing the East Branch of the Pemigewasset Wilderness from the Lincoln Woods Visitor’s Center. Given we haven’t had a lot of snow yet this year, the majority of the trail is hard-packed crust and ice, something I’ve recently seen described as “New England powder.” With these conditions I was able to scale the mountain without issue utilizing microspikes and trekking poles. Here there are a series of ladders that get buried in the winter, which makes for a good spot to utilize the heel bar on mountaineering snowshoes. The majority of the hike is gradual climbing with truly steep sections reserved for the top third of the mountain. The slide is best left for the most experienced winter mountaineers, and I figured it wasn’t a hike I should be doing solo…so Osseo it was! I wasn’t disappointed.Īt times when there’s ample snow, the Osseo Trail is perfectly suited for snowshoes. The trail’s name alone should tell you all you need to know about it’s viability for a winter hike. It’s also worth noting that the path least traveled by in the winter is the Flume Slide Trail. Alas, I’d done the Liberty Springs winter hike before, so it had less appeal for me. This is the way to go for anyone looking to efficiently knock two 4,000-footers off their winter peak bagging list as both mountains can be bagged in less miles than the Osseo route. The most popular route is a two-peak combo via the Liberty Springs Trail up Mt. Flume’s quick access to the highway, ample parking, and popular, reliable hiking route that made it easy to predict the conditions, all played a part in my selection of this hike. I was also on the daycare pickup clock, so Mt. Flume offers an ideal early-season winter hike to break-in your snow hiking legs with a moderate (by White Mountains’ standards) 11-mile trek via the Osseo, Lincoln Woods and Franconia Ridge trails. 11 miles round trip (including Lincoln Woods Trail and the Franconia Ridge Trail) |
